The new technologies have opened up a whole world of possibilities for the disabled.Although at the beginning reaction to them was somewhat hostile owing to the difficulties encountered in their use, research into the accessibility of technological elements, computer programmes and technical devices and the growing awareness of the Administration, manufacturers and society in general are transforming the initial barriers into tools for integration. The adapted technology is enabling blind and other disabled persons to gain access to the information society and is facilitating a multitude of domestic applications. The ONCE is involved in technological research and innovation through its Centre for Research, Development and Typhlotechnical Application (CIDAT).
In just a few years extraordinary progress has been made in the adaptation of systems and machines to the specific needs of the blind. Braille lines, screen readers, talking devices, text capture, processing and printing systems, mobile telephones and adapted home appliances - these are just some of the elements at the service of blind users, and they are improving day by day.
As is also improving awareness relating to Internet access. An increasing number of web designers and webmasters are taking into account the ONCE’s recommendations on this issue. |
