The education of blind and visually impaired children is a cornerstone of the ONCE’s social planning.Today some 8,500 children and young people receive educational care from the ONCE, either directly through attendance at the Institution’s own educational centres or indirectly with the support of educational attention teams when they are integrated in mainstream schools. The support continues throughout university and vocational training studies. The ONCE provides blind students with the textbooks they require in either Braille, audio or electronic format and undertakes the adaptation of their place of study. The Organization also has a Physiotherapy University College, attached to the Autonomous University of Madrid, as this is a very suitable profession for the blind and provides a magnificent source of employment. As a stimulus to research into the field of education for blind and visually impaired children and young people, the ONCE organizes an annual Educational Research into Scholastic Experiences Competition, for members of the teaching profession in Spain, the rest of Europe and Latin America who work in this field. For many years it has also been organizing another competition to incentivate blind students, the Education Graduation Awards. |
