ONCE in Europe

COMMITTED TO THE EUROPEAN UNION

The other important aspect of the international participation of ONCE and its Foundation is their alliance with European institutions since 2000, particularly their conviction that employment (and previous training) is the best means to achieve full social inclusion of blind persons and/or persons with other disabilities.  This is a task they address together with their “European fellow-travellers”; taking an innovative approach where new technologies have acquired a great importance as tools of integration.

In this context, ONCE and its Foundation have contributed to the design and protection of the new European Disability Strategy 2010-2020.  This connects its proposals to those of the European Strategy 2020, whose main objective is achieving intelligent, sustainable and inclusive growth, as well as eliminating all types of barriers through advocacy for design for all and equality and full citizenship values, firmly, to achieve a society reflecting better the ideals of justice and solidarity.

ONCE has been working for over 15 years so that important European directives take people with disabilities into account, with outstanding achievements in the field of their human rights, accessible and adapted transport, non-discrimination, access to culture, universal accessibility or educational and professional inclusion.  ONCE and its Foundation are very present and active in the European Disability Strategy 2010-2020, with a commitment to make Europe a continent for all, apart from motivating Structural Funds to continue generating employment, training and accessibility initiatives everywhere, similar to those undertaken in Spain.

Furthermore, ONCE and its Foundation have contributed with strategies and claims (demands) to the European Accessibility Act; the EU ratification of the Marrakesh Treaty; the follow-up of the observations to the EU by the UN Committee on the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities or the Directive on Website Accessibility, among the most relevant ones.
